What an exciting and unusual day!
Joe from Teach Rex, visited school today with Thomas the gorilla. We learnt about how his family was taken when he was a baby and how he had managed to survive in the Congo. The children learnt of the devastating impact of deforestation and how small changes they make can make a big difference. Thomas was very nervous to begin with but relaxed when he realised how much we cared and wanted to help him.
Take a look at some of the photos below to give you a taste of the day and support a conversation at home.

Our Big Question for this half term is: Where Are We?
Here we are enjoying an orienteering activity to find out what knowledge we currently have about the United Kingdom. We are looking forward to learning a lot more to develop our knowledge and understanding of where we are.
Local History Study - The Dick Kerr Ladies
Date: 19th Jul 2022 @ 11:46pm
We have loved learning about the Dick Kerr Ladies and were so pleased to meet Gail Newsham - the author of "In a League of their Own" and "Football's Forgotten Legends".
We learnt so much and were amazed by the story of this football team. Have a look at the photos to see some of the work we did. We even found out that two of the children in our class had relatives who played for the team.
We were greatly inspired by Gail's story of the ladies and indeed by Gail herself.

We have had an amazing day at our linking school, Yealand Primary. An exciting morning in the forest - hammering and printing with flowers, mud art, transient art, building dens and exploring the forest area - was then followed by a picnic lunch and some delicious and very brightly coloured ice-creams from the ice-cream van! Our afternoon was spent exploring the school outside areas where we played football; made a range of yummy mud pies and cakes in the mud kitchen; raced around on the wheeled trikes and played on the play equipment.
Mrs. Gaskell and I are immensely proud of our class today who immersed themselves in every activity, were an absolute pleasure and a real credit to our school. It was brilliant to see both schools playing and having fun together, we will definitely continue this partnership next year.

........and we really did dance from the heart, staff and all pupils!

Edge Hill University Aspirations Day
Date: 13th Jun 2022 @ 8:43pm
We loved our day at Edge Hill University. The campus was calm, full of green areas (including lakes and even a beach) and a range of wildlife - although we didn't meet the campus cat! We were really impressed with the fantastic sports facilities and many of us were inspired by the medical training centre for nurses, midwifes, etc and their £30,000 dummies which could simulate different illnesses!
Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 5:16pm
Year 5 were pleased to receive a return visit from local artist Dave Rob. He talked to the children about colour mixing and matching to complete their self portraits. He will pick them up from us next week and use them to create something for us to keep. We can't wait and we thank him so much for spending his valuable time with us and supporting us to develop new skills.
Date: 9th Jun 2022 @ 5:33pm
Today we launched the big question for our final half term of the year!
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
We talked about what the words FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER meant to us at this stage in the year. The children amazed me with their responses which you will see from the photo of our display.
The children were also introduced to the idea of philosophy and we had some really thoughtful conversations about some of the quotes of Ancient Greek philosophers.
To end the session, the children had a piece of a Greek pot and had to regroup by finding pupils with the other parts. We began to think about what clues to the past these held.
Date: 7th Jun 2022 @ 8:35pm
We were all pleased to receive a second visit from Action for Children. During the afternoon we revisited our understanding of resilience. We learnt about practical techniques to help us manage difficult times and thought about where or who to go to when we needed help.
Date: 7th Jun 2022 @ 8:23pm
As we concluded our half term theme, we were left in no doubt of the answer to our big question:
Rainforests: essential or desireable?
Take a look at the photos below showing our plaquards and pencil cases. We made our feelings known on our peaceful protest march which was concluded very persuasivley by speeches given by Josh D and Jude. Visit our class garden space to look more closely at our plaquards.
Date: 27th May 2022 @ 5:54pm
We celebrated in style today. After coming to school in red, white and blue and then eating a picnic lunch together, we made decorative spatulas and plant pots to commemorate the occassion.

Year 5 had a brilliant athletics session at Priory Academy this week. They learnt to throw shot put with accuracy and also pushed themselves with some long distance running.
Date: 22nd May 2022 @ 9:12pm
The charity Action for Children visited this week to support the children to develop resilience and learn strategies to bounce back from challenging situations. It was a perfect time to reflect on the last two years. The children were helped to realise that negative feelings and anxiety is normal and experienced by everyone. They learned about the links between thoughts, feelings and actions and had chance to talk. It was also good fun and the children behaved excellently.
We are looking forward to our second visit next week.
