Relationship and Health Education (RSE and PHSE)

At Penwortham Primary School, we are committed to supporting every child’s personal development through a comprehensive PSHE and RSE curriculum. We want parents and carers to feel informed and involved in what their children are learning β€” especially when it comes to relationships, health, and emotional wellbeing.

πŸ“š What is PSHE?

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) is a vital part of the curriculum that helps children grow into confident, healthy, and responsible individuals. It supports their wellbeing and prepares them for life beyond the classroom.

Our PSHE curriculum covers three core themes:

  • Health and Wellbeing

  • Relationships

  • Living in the Wider World

❀️ Our RSE Approach

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is a statutory part of the PSHE curriculum. It helps children understand healthy relationships, respect for others, and personal safety β€” in an age-appropriate and sensitive way.

We deliver RSE in line with the Department for Education guidelines and in consultation with parents.

πŸ“– Curriculum Planning

We follow the SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) scheme from Coram Life Education, which provides a structured, age-appropriate programme from Reception to Year 6.

Our lessons are:
βœ… Age-appropriate
βœ… Evidence-based
βœ… Fully inclusive
βœ… Aligned with safeguarding principles

To ensure high-quality teaching, we also refer to the guidance and training from the PSHE Association, the national body for PSHE education.

  • Weekly lessons

  • Circle time and discussion

  • Role play and storytelling

  • Cross-curricular links (e.g. science, RE)

  • Whole-school events (e.g. Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Awareness)
