Our community

At Penwortham Primary School, we believe it is important for pupils to understand their role within the wider community. We are proud to be part of our local community and aim to provide opportunities for children to contribute positively, show kindness and develop respect for others.

Our approach to community involvement reflects our school values of Aspire, Belong, Care and Discover and supports pupils to understand how they can make a difference beyond the school gates.

Learning Through Community Involvement

Through community activities, pupils are encouraged to:

  • develop empathy and compassion

  • understand different life experiences

  • take responsibility as active citizens

  • build respect for others and their communities

These experiences support pupils’ personal development and help prepare them for life in modern Britain.

Community Partnerships and Events

Pupils regularly take part in activities that support and strengthen links with the local community. Examples include:

  • Supporting the local food bank
Each year at Harvest, pupils and families donate food to support those in need within our local community. This helps pupils understand the importance of caring for others and supporting those less fortunate.

  • Community remembrance and respect
Our House Captains represent the school at local memorial services, including Remembrance events. Pupils take part in acts of remembrance to honour those who have lost their lives in conflicts, developing understanding, respect and reflection.

  • Intergenerational links
Pupils have taken part in activities to connect with members of the local community, including sharing stories and messages with residents of local care settings. These experiences help pupils appreciate the value of kindness, communication and community connection.

Pupil Leadership and Community Engagement

Community involvement is often led by pupils through leadership roles such as House Captains and School Council members. This allows pupils to:

  • represent the school positively

  • take responsibility for community events

  • contribute ideas and initiatives

  • develop confidence and leadership skills

Pupil Voice

Our pupils tell us that being involved in the community helps them feel proud of their school and the difference they can make.

“I like helping in the community because it shows we care about other people, not just ourselves.”
– Key Stage 2 pupil

Impact on Pupils

Through engagement with the community, pupils at Penwortham Primary School:

  • develop a strong sense of belonging

  • show care and respect for others

  • understand their role as responsible citizens

  • gain confidence in contributing positively to society

These experiences support our vision of happy children who achieve.

British Values

Our community work supports the teaching of British Values, including:

  • mutual respect and tolerance

  • individual liberty

  • democracy, through pupil leadership and representation

  • the rule of law, through understanding civic responsibility and remembrance

By engaging with the wider community, pupils develop respect for others and an understanding of their responsibilities as members of society.
