Writing

At Penwortham Primary School, writing is an essential skill that enables children to communicate ideas, express creativity and succeed across the curriculum. Our writing curriculum reflects The Penwortham Way and supports pupils to:

  • Be Ready – develop the skills and knowledge needed to write effectively

  • Be Respectful – write thoughtfully, considering audience, purpose and viewpoint

  • Be Responsible – take pride in their writing and continually improve it

Our aim is for all pupils to become confident, capable writers who can write clearly and creatively for a range of purposes and audiences.

Mrs Cunningham leads writing across school and supports staff to ensure high-quality teaching, consistency and progression in writing from EYFS to Year 6.

Writing Curriculum – Intent

At Penwortham Primary School, our writing curriculum is designed to develop confident, articulate and creative writers who can communicate effectively in a range of contexts.

We aim to:

  • develop strong foundations in spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting

  • teach pupils how to plan, draft, edit and improve their writing

  • inspire pupils to write with purpose, imagination and clarity

  • ensure all pupils, including those who find writing difficult, are well supported

High expectations and carefully chosen writing opportunities enable pupils to develop resilience, confidence and pride in their work.

Writing Curriculum – Implementation

Writing is taught through a structured and progressive approach that combines:

  • explicit teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation

  • high-quality model texts

  • shared and guided writing

  • regular independent writing opportunities

Pupils are taught how to write for different purposes and audiences, including:

  • narrative

  • non-fiction

  • persuasive and informative writing

  • poetry

Teachers model the writing process and support pupils to plan, draft, revise and edit their work. Collaboration is encouraged through discussion, peer feedback and shared reflection, helping pupils to learn from one another and improve their writing.

Writing opportunities are carefully planned to link with reading and the wider curriculum, allowing pupils to apply their skills meaningfully across subjects.

Assessment is ongoing and used to inform teaching, ensuring pupils receive targeted support where needed and are challenged appropriately.

Writing Curriculum – Impact

As a result of our writing curriculum, pupils at Penwortham Primary School:

  • develop secure technical writing skills

  • write confidently for a range of purposes and audiences

  • take pride in their written work

  • show resilience and independence as writers

  • are able to edit and improve their writing effectively

Pupils leave Penwortham as writers who are ready to meet the demands of the next stage of their education, respectful of language and communication, and responsible for the quality of their work.

Supporting All Writers

We recognise that children develop as writers at different rates. Pupils who need additional support are identified early and provided with targeted teaching and intervention to help them succeed. We work closely with families to support writing development at home and school.
