Like the children at Penwortham Primary School, my journey with the French language started at Primary School and then continued through to GCSE level. I have had the opportunity to visit both France and Mauritius, two French-speaking countries, where I was able to use the language in real-life situations and deepen my connection with French culture.

One of the things I love most about French is how it enhances my understanding of English. The etymology of French words has given me insight into the roots of many complex English terms, which has been invaluable in both learning and teaching. This linguistic connection helps make learning new vocabulary more accessible and engaging for students, while also broadening their understanding and appreciation of both languages.

For me, French is more than just a language—it's a tool that opens up new perspectives, not only on the world but also on the way we communicate.

Languages Progression of Skills

The rich, diverse, and multicultural nature of the United Kingdom requires a necessity to provide our pupils with an understanding of other cultures and languages. This appreciation and respect is not only representative of British Values, but also our school values. Our curriculum is designed to positively impact pupils’ ideas on identity and community through the enjoyment of learning a new language and lends itself to essential critical thinking skills pupils require to gain perspective on their own communication systems, enhancing and encouraging the reflection of their own language and culture.

At Penwortham Primary School, we aim to enable our pupils to achieve excellence in Languages as follows:

Aspire: By fostering a positive and inclusive environment, we inspire pupils to step outside of their comfort zones to learn new languages and cultures, broadening their understanding of the world. We support each child in developing the confidence and curiosity needed to pursue their highest potential in language learning.

Belong: Our value “belong” emphasises the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where all pupils feel valued and connected through language learning. By exploring different cultures and languages, pupils develop a deeper appreciation for diversity, fostering a sense of unity and belonging within our school community and beyond.

Care: By nurturing an environment of kindness and respect, we help pupils understand the importance of caring for others and valuing diverse voices. We aim to create thoughtful, globally aware learners who are motivated to make a positive impact in their communities and the wider world.

Discover: We encourage pupils to step beyond familiar experiences, unlocking a broader understanding of the world and their place within it. We cultivate inquisitive learners who embrace the joy of learning and are eager to explore diverse perspectives and possibilities.

Excellence: We are committed to fostering a learning environment that promotes dedication, resilience and a growth mindset, helping pupils to excel and take pride in their progress. We aim to inspire confident, skilled linguists who approach their studies with purpose and a commitment and to continuous improvement.
