Prevent
Prevent Duty at Penwortham Primary School
At Penwortham Primary School, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our statutory responsibilities, we actively support the Government’s Prevent Strategy, which aims to safeguard children and young people from the risk of radicalisation and extremism. Prevent is not about limiting discussion or stifling opinions — it is about protecting children from harm, promoting critical thinking, and helping them stay safe both online and in the community.
The Prevent Duty became statutory for all schools and childcare settings on 1st July 2015, and it remains an essential part of our safeguarding practice today. We work closely with a wide multi‑agency network, including the Police, the Local Authority and the Lancashire Safeguarding Children Board, to ensure early identification and support for anyone who may be vulnerable.
Our Responsibilities Under the Prevent Duty
At Penwortham Primary School, we ensure that:
All staff receive Prevent training, as identified by school leaders, including the Headteacher.
Staff understand when it is appropriate to make a Prevent‑related referral and know how to do so.
Concerns are referred to our Prevent Leads: Miss Penarski (Headteacher) and Mrs Cunningham (Deputy Headteacher).
We actively promote British Values — democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs — throughout our curriculum and wider school life.
Children are taught how to stay safe online, recognise risks, and seek help if they are worried about anything they see or hear.
Prevent is an integral part of our wider safeguarding culture and supports our commitment to keeping every child safe.
What is Channel?
Channel is a voluntary, confidential safeguarding programme which supports individuals who may be vulnerable to being drawn into extremism. It is not a criminal process. At Penwortham Primary School, we work closely with families and partner agencies to ensure that any child who may need early help or additional support is offered it at the earliest opportunity.
What Parents Need to Know
Children can be vulnerable to harmful influences in many ways, including online. We encourage parents to be aware of:
Sudden changes in behaviour or beliefs
Increased secrecy around online activity
Spending more time isolated from friends or family
Accessing extremist or concerning material online
If you ever have concerns about a child, please speak to one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads.
