We all enjoyed a PE lesson with Joel during the day.

The Day the Gorilla Came

Date: 12th Sep 2022 @ 10:51pm

What an exciting and unusual day!

Joe from Teach Rex, visited school today with Thomas the gorilla. We learnt about how his family was taken when he was a baby and how he had managed to survive in the Congo. The children learnt of the devastating impact of deforestation and how small changes they make can make a big difference. Thomas was very nervous to begin with but relaxed when he realised how much we cared and wanted to help him.

Take a look at some of the photos below to give you a taste of the day and support a conversation at home.

Launching our Big Question

Date: 11th Sep 2022 @ 10:29pm

Our Big Question for this half term is: Where Are We?

Here we are enjoying an orienteering activity to find out what knowledge we currently have about the United Kingdom. We are looking forward to learning a lot more to develop our knowledge and understanding of where we are.

Local History Study - The Dick Kerr Ladies

Date: 19th Jul 2022 @ 11:46pm

We have loved learning about the Dick Kerr Ladies and were so pleased to meet Gail Newsham -  the author of "In a League of their Own" and "Football's Forgotten Legends".

We learnt so much and were amazed by the story of this football team. Have a look at the photos to see some of the work we did. We even found out that two of the children in our class had relatives who played for the team.

We were greatly inspired by Gail's story of the ladies and indeed by Gail herself.

They did really well in all of their events including running, throwing and jumping.

They competed against other schools from the local area.

Well done everyone!

Linking Schools

Date: 4th Jul 2022 @ 8:51pm

We have had an amazing day at our linking school, Yealand Primary. An exciting morning in the forest - hammering and printing with flowers, mud art, transient art, building dens and exploring the forest area - was then followed by a picnic lunch and some delicious and very brightly coloured ice-creams from the ice-cream van! Our afternoon was spent exploring the school outside areas where we played football; made a range of yummy mud pies and cakes in the mud kitchen; raced around on the wheeled trikes and played on the play equipment.

Mrs. Gaskell and I are immensely proud of our class today who immersed themselves in every activity, were an absolute pleasure and a real credit to our school. It was brilliant to see both schools playing and having fun together, we will definitely continue this partnership next year.

Geography Field work

Date: 1st Jul 2022 @ 5:18pm

As part of national Field Work Week, Y5 have been out in the school grounds to measure wind direction and wind speed. We are doing this to help us decide where the best place will be to fly the kites we are making in Design Technology and indeed whether we think they will fly at all!

Dance From the Heart

........and we really did dance from the heart, staff and all pupils!

Our vist from a kite expert - Miss Flint!

She brought examples including the:

  • Delta stunt kite
  • Soft foil kite
  • Flexi foil kite
  • Revolution kite.

We were introduced to the techinical vocabulary including: spars, ripstop, leading edge, rigidity, frame and reinforcement.

Miss Flint advised us to think carefuly about material, size, shape, strength and weakpoints when we design and make our own kites.

Thank you for your time Miss Flint!

Cricket

Date: 14th Jun 2022 @ 9:14pm

Fantastic afternoon of cricket. Some of us are natural cricketers and really surprised ourselves!

Edge Hill University Aspirations Day

Date: 13th Jun 2022 @ 8:43pm

We loved our day at Edge Hill University. The campus was calm, full of green areas (including lakes and even a beach) and a range of wildlife - although we didn't meet the campus cat! We were really impressed with the fantastic sports facilities and many of us were inspired by the medical training centre for nurses, midwifes, etc and their £30,000 dummies which could simulate different illnesses!

Dave Rob came back!

Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 5:16pm

Year 5 were pleased to receive a return visit from local artist Dave Rob. He talked to the children about colour mixing and matching to complete their self portraits. He will pick them up from us next week and use them to create something for us to keep. We can't wait and we thank him so much for spending his valuable time with us and supporting us to develop new skills.

Our Big Question for Summer 2

Date: 9th Jun 2022 @ 5:33pm

Today we launched the big question for our final half term of the year!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

We talked about what  the words FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER meant to us at this stage in the year. The children amazed me with their responses which you will see from the photo of our display.

The children were also introduced to the idea of philosophy and we had some really thoughtful conversations about some of the quotes of Ancient Greek philosophers.

To end the session, the children had a piece of a Greek pot and had to regroup by finding pupils with the other parts. We began to think about what clues to the past these held.

Action for Children Part 2

Date: 7th Jun 2022 @ 8:35pm

We were all pleased to receive a second visit from Action for Children. During the afternoon we revisited our understanding of resilience. We learnt about practical techniques to help us manage difficult times and thought about where or who to go to when we needed help.

Deforestation

Date: 7th Jun 2022 @ 8:23pm

As we concluded our half term theme, we were left in no doubt of the answer to our big question:

Rainforests: essential or desireable?

Take a look at the photos below showing our plaquards and pencil cases. We made our feelings known on our peaceful protest march which was concluded very persuasivley by speeches given by Josh D and Jude. Visit our class garden space to look more closely at our plaquards.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Date: 27th May 2022 @ 5:54pm

We celebrated in style today. After coming to school in red, white and blue and then eating a picnic lunch together, we made decorative spatulas and plant pots to commemorate the occassion.

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Year 5 had a brilliant athletics session at Priory Academy this week. They learnt to throw shot put with accuracy and also pushed themselves with some long distance running.

Action for Children

Date: 22nd May 2022 @ 9:12pm

The charity Action for Children visited this week to support the children to develop resilience and learn strategies to bounce back from challenging situations. It was a perfect time to reflect on the last two years. The children were helped to realise that negative feelings and anxiety is normal and experienced by everyone. They learned about the links between thoughts, feelings and actions and had chance to talk. It was also good fun and the children behaved excellently.

We are looking forward to our second visit next week.

Striking and Fielding Festival

Date: 22nd May 2022 @ 8:54pm

Year 5 had a great start to Friday. Dave taught us striking and fielding skills before we took part in a really fun and competitive game using cricket skills. Well done to everyone for taking part so well and so energetically.

Money Management

Date: 13th May 2022 @ 8:51am

Mr Souter did not disappoint, as he joined us for the final time this year. Mr Souter works for a charity “Debt Aware” and payed us this visit to teach us about banking, interest, and all the different ways there are to pay for things. We learnt that different payments are better at different times and for different things. As you can see from the photos, we also laughed a lot!

Local Artist Visit

Date: 13th May 2022 @ 7:41am

Local artist Dave Rob visited us yesterday. We had looked at his work during the Autumn Term when we were learning about the UK and focusing on landmarks. Dave has created a lot of work based around local landmarks and some of his work is on sale locally.

Dave talked to us about how he became an artist, shared the passion he has for his job and helped us understand graphic design.

He worked with us for the afternoon to create a piece of art work. You can see what we are working on in the photos. We had a great time and are looking forward to Dave coming back before the end of the half term.

Life Education Visit

Date: 2nd May 2022 @ 9:03pm

Year 5 had a visit from a familiar friend - Harold!

We spent time focusing on the importance of friendship and how to handle tricky situations without falling out. Using drama, the children practised being assertive and really impressed the visiting educator in school with their excellent behaviour, engagement and focus.

Tree Decorations

Date: 2nd May 2022 @ 8:54pm

Rainforests: essential or desireable?

As part of our work this half term, we have been getting to know our trees well and taking more care of our environment. As part of our homework we have been making bird feeders and pompoms to decorate the tree we have got to know the best. It didn't take long before the birds began to visit. Here are a few of the decorations you will see when in the school playground.
