Local History

Lesson: History

In the Autumn term, we looked at the local history of Penwortham where we found out about how Penwortham has grown. We looked at some of the old buildings and what their original purposes had been. We found out about the old Motte and Bailey castle that stood on Penwortham Hill behind the church. We also looked at the war memorial. All of these aspects of Penwortham created lots of discussion and allowed us to explore our local community.
More recently, we have been studying Preston Market. We have compared primary sources of Preston Market from different eras. We have looked at its history and the changes made to celebrate its 50th birthday. We were lucky enough to have a visitor who had worked on the market, who was able to answer some of the children’s questions. The class have enjoyed both experiences and I'm sure would love to share all the interesting things they have learnt.
Maybe over the summer holidays, your children could take you to see and discuss the features of Preston Market or Penwortham in the present day.
