🌟 Interventions & Provision

How We Support Children at Penwortham Primary School

At Penwortham Primary School, we provide a wide range of high‑quality interventions to ensure that every child can access learning, make progress and feel confident. Our provision is flexible, responsive and tailored to individual needs through the Graduated Approach.

Interventions are delivered by trained staff and overseen by the SENDCo. They are regularly reviewed to ensure they are having the intended impact.

🌿 Our Range of Interventions

We offer support across four key areas of need, as outlined in the SEND Code of Practice.

1. Communication & Interaction

Support may include:

  • Speech and Language Therapy programmes

  • Vocabulary and language‑development groups

  • Social communication groups

  • Visual supports (timetables, task boards, now/next)

  • Structured routines and clear modelling

These interventions help children develop expressive and receptive language, social understanding and confidence in communication.

2. Cognition & Learning

Support may include:

  • Phonics interventions

  • Reading fluency and comprehension groups

  • Precision teaching

  • Maths catch‑up and pre‑teaching

  • Memory and processing skills activities

  • Small‑group or 1:1 targeted teaching

These interventions help children build secure foundations in literacy and numeracy and develop strategies for independent learning.

3. Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH)

Support may include:

  • Emotional regulation sessions

  • Nurture‑based activities

  • The Beach Hut (calm, safe space for regulation)

  • Anxiety‑reduction strategies

  • Friendship and social skills groups

  • Check‑ins with trusted adults

  • Early Help support

These interventions help children understand their emotions, build resilience and feel safe and supported in school.

4. Sensory & Physical Needs

Support may include:

  • Sensory circuits

  • Fine and gross motor skills programmes

  • Occupational Therapy strategies

  • Adapted equipment

  • Movement breaks

  • Environmental adjustments (lighting, seating, noise reduction)

These interventions help children feel regulated, comfortable and ready to learn.

🌿 How We Decide Which Interventions to Use

Interventions are chosen based on:

  • Teacher assessments

  • Observations

  • Pupil voice

  • Parent discussions

  • External agency advice

  • SENDCo recommendations

Every intervention is part of the Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycle and is monitored for impact.

🌿 Working With External Professionals

Where needed, we work closely with:

  • Educational Psychologists

  • Speech and Language Therapists

  • Occupational Therapists

  • CAMHS

  • Specialist teachers

  • School Nursing Team

Their expertise helps us tailor provision even more closely to each child’s needs.

🌿 Reviewing Progress

We review interventions regularly to ensure they are effective. Reviews may lead to:

  • Continuing the intervention

  • Adjusting the approach

  • Increasing support

  • Reducing support

  • Referring to external agencies

  • Considering an EHCP needs assessment

Parents are involved at every stage.
