Wellbeing Resources for Families
At Penwortham Primary School, we work closely with families to support children’s emotional wellbeing. This page provides trusted advice, guidance and external support for parents and carers. If you are worried about your child, please speak to us, we are here to help.
If You’re Worried About Your Child
If your child’s life is in immediate danger, call 999. If not, follow the guidance below to help you decide what to do next.
Children can experience a wide range of emotions as they grow. It’s normal to feel angry, sad, worried or stressed sometimes. However, if they are struggling to cope with these feelings, they may need extra support.
Signs to Look Out For
Sudden changes in behaviour
Negative thoughts or low self‑esteem
Arguing or fighting
Sleep difficulties
Avoiding school or wanting to stay close to you
Unexplained aches and pains
Remember: every child is different, and these signs do not always mean there is a mental health problem but they may be a sign that your child needs support.
What You Can Do at Home
Talk Together
Find time to talk, just the two of you. “Check in” while doing everyday activities so talking about feelings becomes natural.
Play Together
Play helps children explore emotions, solve problems and express themselves without words.
Be a Role Model
Show your child how you manage difficult feelings and look after your own wellbeing.
Life Events That Can Affect Children
Children and young people may struggle during big changes, such as:
Bereavement
Illness in the family
Parents separating
Moving house or school
Tests and exams
Friendship or relationship issues
Try talking to them first. If you’re worried, follow our advice for getting help.
