Take a look at the photos where you will also see some sneaky reading going on!

Year 6 First Aid

Date: 15th Jan 2024 @ 12:51pm

We had an extremely informative and valuable session this morning learning to be mini first aiders. We learnt how to help someone who is unconscious; someone who has burnt themselves; someone who is choking and how to support someone who has cut or broken a limb.

Everyone is bringing home a challenge tonight - to practise the recovery position on a member of their family and to share the key tips from today's session with everyone at home.

Relaxation Strategies

Date: 11th Jan 2024 @ 6:38pm

Year 6 received support and advice in how to relax and develop their positive mindset today with a yoga session from Yogi. They stretched;developed breathing techniques; practised yoga poses and practised positive affirmation. Good work!

Macbeth drama workshop

Date: 10th Jan 2024 @ 12:07pm

We have had a fabulous dramatic morning with Charlie from Burnley Youth Theatre acting out sections of Macbeth, learning the plot and getting into role as all the main characters. We had some very natural kings and army generals and worryingly a lot of witches!

We are looking festive!

Science at Priory

Date: 6th Dec 2023 @ 10:30am

Year 6 had a great lesson focussing on light at Priory Academy this week. They had learned about sources of light and how light travels back at school but in the High School got the chance to prove it in many ways. They saw the path of light with a laser and they got the chance to investigate using light boxes. It was good to see past pupils supporting the lesson and to get a feel for science at secondary school. The class impressed Priory with their subject knowledge and excellent behaviour for learning.

The Windrush Experience

Date: 23rd Nov 2023 @ 6:25pm

We were lucky to have the opportunity to welcome Adrian Murrell into school this afternoon to support our History curriculum.

We learnt:

  • That the children who left the Carribean for England travelled for two weeks and only had a tiny brief case to put all their belongings in.
  • The people that travelled to England came from the Carribean Islands of: Dominica, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Monserat.
  • About the reactions of the white people when the Windrush generation arrived.
  • The way black people were portrayed on the television and in toys and books.
  • That the first black lady to win an Oscar had to sit on her own during the awards ceremony.
  • That there were signs which told white people to go one way and coloured people another.

The afternoon was:

  • shocking
  • knowledgeable
  • exciting
  • exhilerating
  • suprising
  • confusing
  • brilliant
  • cool
  • action packed
  • interesting
  • fascinating

Key messgages:

  • The cover is not the book, so open it up and take a look.
  • It is important to get to know people and not judge them based on appearance. Look at people on the inside not the outside.
  • Don't treat people differently because they look different to you.
  • We should be united.

Road and Fire Safety

Date: 17th Nov 2023 @ 5:32pm

Year 6 had a visit from the Fire Service today to ensure we had the knowledge to keep ourselves safe.

Key points for road safety included:

  •  When on our bikes, make sure we wear a helmet and can be seen. We have a phone case to protect our phone so surely we would want to protect our own brain!
  • We must pay attention when crossing the road
  • Walk behind rather than in front of a stopped bus
  • As a passenger of a car, do not distract the driver
  • Wear a seatbelt.

Key points for fire safety included:

  • A recap of stop, drop and roll
  • Check smoke alarms
  • Talk about an escape plan with our families
  • Switch off phone chargers at night and don't keep phones under our pillow
  • Close doors
  • Never make a hoax call

We also learnt about 999i which we think is amazing.

Paul Sturgess Basketball Player visit

Date: 13th Nov 2023 @ 12:34pm

Wow! What an amazing day with our special visitor!

He showed us some amazing talents and talked to us about believing in our own abilities.

He helped us to remember not to judge people by what they look like. Every has feelings and talents. Everyone is unique!

Here are a couple of videos from the day!

Running Wild Stories

Date: 7th Nov 2023 @ 9:36pm

Enjoy some extracts from our Running Wild stories we wrote last half-term. We published the part of our stories we were most proud of maybe because of our language, use of grammar techniques or the way we have drawn the reader in.

Rugby

Date: 7th Nov 2023 @ 9:32pm

We loved our first session of rugby with Coach Ian - some of us certainly found every patch of mud on the field!

Visiting Scientists

Date: 3rd Nov 2023 @ 4:40pm

Just before we broke up for half term, Year 6 had a visit from two scientists to support their work on Evolution and Inheritance.

They learnt about the Theory of Evolution by natural selection, Charles Darwin and fossil records. During the morning they gained much knowledge, had lots of fun and then had the chance to handle fossils by classifying, measuring, weighing and quantifying them.

A Visiting Artist

Date: 3rd Nov 2023 @ 4:27pm

As part of our work around our Big Question: Talent - nature or nurture?, Year 6 were really lucky today to be able to work with an artist in residence - Salina Somalya.

Their work focused on creating an installation for outdoors which will become a focal point for Remembrance and will also remain as part of their legacy to Penwortham Primary School.

Using plastic carrier bags, Year 6 learnt to recycle and repurpose in a creative way. Salina talked to the children about her work and they had the chance to develop skills and learn techniques of design using templates and a heat gun.

Year 6 listened attentively; showed brilliant teamwork; followed advice; discussed the importance of Remembrance; produced a fantastic outcome and even saw a double rainbow!

Take a look at the photos showing the different stages of their work and the final outcome.

Which beak is the most efficient?

Date: 12th Oct 2023 @ 12:50pm

We have been learning about the Galapagos Finches and how Darwin researched their beak adaptation. This week we investigated using different size and shape beaks to eat a range of different foods to see which beak is the most efficient, most versatile and which one could be easily adapted in the future.

Borwick Hall Day 4

Date: 22nd Sep 2023 @ 6:55am

Our final day at Borwick Hall. Today included the visit to Warton Cragg and the challenging team tasks of crate stacking and the leap of faith.

It has been a great experience. The children have gained skills and knowledge; all coming home with more than they had before they left. We are very proud of them all.

Borwick Hall Day 3

Date: 20th Sep 2023 @ 6:04pm

We have seen the sunshine all afternoon today! The groups have swapped activities today - half went to Cathedral Quarries and the other half went canoeing and indoor climbing.

We were also really lucky to be given a tour of Borwick Hall where we learnt about the history of the building, the family and some of the legends linked to the building and surrounding area.

Our last evening in the sunshine has enabled us to complete the Head Hunters challenge around the grounds and spend our money in the tuck shop.

Borwick Hall Day 2

Date: 19th Sep 2023 @ 7:05pm

Another fun packed and adventurous day at Borwick has been enjoyed by all even if it has been a little bit wet!

Some of us spent half a day on the canal in canoes playing games and paddling down the canal and under many bridges and half the day solving group challenges, including over the wall and crossing the river.

The other half of the group visited Cathedral Quarries where they built fires, explored tunnels in the cliff, scrambled up rocks, explored the caves and learnt some new bush craft techniques.

This evening we are being entertained by Mrs.Hesketh’s quiz!

Borwick Hall Day 1

Date: 18th Sep 2023 @ 7:16pm

We have had a brilliant first day and no rain up here so far whilst we have been out and about. Some of us have climbed Warton Crag (a mountain according to some of the children but a small hill to the instructor!) while others have completed the leap of faith and the crate stacking challenge.

This evening we are exploring the grounds before finishing off with hot chocolate and cookies.

Puzzle Day Fun

Date: 14th Sep 2023 @ 6:42am

Year 6 had a great time during Puzzle Day this week. In groups, they were given lots of challenging puzzles to complete which tested everyone!

It was great to see the children demonstrating, practising and improving their My Personal Best qualities of:

  • resilience
  • communication
  • trust
  • problem solving
  • curiosity
  • reflection

In addition to these, the children demonstrated lots of perseverance and patience! Have a look at the photos below.
